Tolkien Week 7

Hello everyone! Welcome to my Corner!

Whew! I’ve finally finished with the section from the Silmarillion. Now, I’ve read sections from Beren and Luthien and The Children of Hurin, but now I’m back to the Silmarillion again. It’s getting really fun, going from book to book. I’m really impressed with the reading plan. I’m also really proud of my encyclopedia. And the timeline and family tree are looking really good as well.

One thing I’m puzzled about is the Lay of Leithian, the tale of Beren and Luthien. There are multiple versions in which Sauron, the Lord of Wolves, is called Tevildo, the Prince of Cats! Quite a switch. And Beren isn’t always a man. Sometimes he’s a different kind of Elf, called a Gnome. And also (spoiler alert ahead), the wolf who bites off Beren’s hand at the end has eleven different names: Carcharoth, the Red Maw, Anfauglir, the Jaws of Thirst, Karkaras, Knife-fang, the Hell-wolf, Carcaras, the Wolf-ward, and Carcharas! It’s a little confusing to keep track of them all.

Your friend,

Christopher
