Morning Nuggets with Mister Rogers – Slow Down

clock

Today begins our second week of Morning Nuggets from the Experts! We will start with Toast Sticks for the Heart from The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers, written by Amy Hollingsworth.

In chapter one, Ms. Hollingsworth says, “Mister Rogers knew how hurried children are in all areas of their lives. (School schedules may follow a fixed schedule, he once noted, but human development doesn’t.)” She goes on to share, “His message was clear: Slow down. Take your time.”

Oh boy. I can’t read this without taking a deep breath and considering my own quick-paced and, sometimes, hectic ways. I have taken steps to keep it all in check as much as possible and I guard against too many ongoing extracurricular commitments, but there is still much work to be done in this area of my life.

The author states that for a child’s emotional development and for their soul, Mister Rogers knew that hurriedness causes it to be hard and resistant. But taking time and going slow nurtures, or as he liked to say, “nourishes.”

I know we’re all busy, but I’m going to take it down a notch. How about you?

Have a great Monday!
