I believe the best way to develop skills and talents is putting them to use as they are being acquired. By applying what we learn, and setting it into motion during the learning process, we’ll discover a greater understanding and deeper meaning of the topic.
“Americans need to discover,” states Harvard University professor, David Edwards, in his article “American Schools Are Training Kids for a World That Doesn’t Exist.” Professor Edwards continues- “We ‘learn,’ and after this we ‘do.’ We go to school, and then we go to work. This approach does not map very well to personal and professional success in America today. Learning and doing have become inseparable in the face of conditions that invite us to discover.”
That’s what we have done with Animals in Time—we’ve set learning into motion with KIDS as the creators. Children made all the artwork in Animals in Time, Volume 3, along with the adventure maps and seek-n-find pictures in the Animals in Time, Activity Bundle. In Volumes 1 and 2, children are not only responsible for the artwork, but the stories themselves, in producing these unique resources (coming soon).
This project, as a whole, has provided the opportunity for the kids to hone their skills in artistic expression through art and creative writing; broaden their understanding of animals, history, geography, noteworthy individuals including artists, leaders, and so forth; and exercise their research techniques as they gathered information necessary for the stories.
As these kids develop resources to educate and entertain, they inspire other children to do the same: learn by discovering and creating. These young people have moved beyond merely striving for grades on a test ~ they know how to transform what they have learned into something valuable for the world around them.
And that brings me back to the point: WHY WAIT TO CREATE?!
